How to Use Automation in Logic Pro

Bring your mix to life by automating volume, panning, and plugin parameters over time for a dynamic and professional feel.

Automation allows you to record or draw changes to your mix that happen automatically during playback. This guide shows you how to add movement and excitement to your tracks without manual adjustments.

Follow these steps

  1. Enable Automation view

Press the 'A' key on your keyboard to toggle the Automation view in the Tracks area. The track headers will expand to show automation options.

  2. Select your parameter

Click the automation parameter menu (usually says 'Volume' by default) to choose which setting you want to change.

  3. Draw nodes and curves

Click on the track's automation line to create 'nodes' (dots). Click and drag these nodes up or down to change the value at specific times.

  4. Record live movements

Change the automation mode to 'Latch' or 'Touch' and move a fader while the song plays to record your movements in real-time.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving automation in 'Write' mode, which will overwrite your moves every time the playhead passes.
  • Creating too many nodes, making the automation lines difficult to adjust later.
