How to Start a New Project in Logic Pro

Learn the correct way to launch a Logic Pro session. Set your project properties, choose track types, and save your work safely from the start.

This guide helps you correctly configure a new session and save it to your local storage. Setting these parameters early prevents technical issues with sample rates and file management later.

Follow these steps

  1. Launch and Select Template

Open Logic Pro and select 'New Project' from the File menu. Choose the 'Empty Project' template to start with a clean slate.

  2. Choose Your First Track

Pick between an Audio track for microphones or a Software Instrument track for MIDI. You can change this later, but starting with one track is required to open the main window.

  3. Configure Global Settings

Locate the Project Settings or LCD display at the top center. Set your desired Tempo (BPM) and Key Signature to match your musical idea.

  4. Save the Project Package

Go to File > Save As to name your project. Ensure 'Project' is selected as the organized format and check all 'Assets' boxes to keep your files together.

Common mistakes

  • Saving projects in the Downloads folder instead of a dedicated drive.
  • Forgetting to check the "Copy audio files into project" box.
