How to Record MIDI in Logic Pro
Capture your musical ideas using MIDI controllers or your computer keyboard. This tutorial covers track setup and recording basics.
This tutorial shows you how to capture performances from a MIDI keyboard or your computer. You will be able to edit these notes later to fix timing or melody errors.
Follow these steps
Create an Instrument Track
Press the '+' button and choose Software Instrument. Pick a sound from the Library on the left, such as a piano or synthesizer.
Connect Your Controller
If you don't have a controller, press Command-K to open Musical Typing. This allows you to use your computer's letter keys to play notes.
Record Your Performance
Ensure the track is selected and press the 'R' key to start the metronome and recording. Play your melody or chord progression in time with the click.
Finish the Take
Press Spacebar to stop. Logic will automatically create a MIDI region containing all the notes you played.
Common mistakes
- Selecting an Audio track instead of a Software Instrument track.
- Forgetting to turn on the MIDI controller before launching Logic Pro.
