How to Gain Stage a Mix in Logic Pro
Ensure your mix has plenty of headroom and zero distortion by mastering the art of gain staging within your Logic Pro session.
Gain staging is the process of managing volume levels at every stage of the signal path to prevent digital clipping. It ensures your plugins operate at their 'sweet spot' and leaves room for the final mastering stage.
Follow these steps
Check region levels
Look at your raw audio regions. If they look like solid blocks, use the Gain tool or the Region Inspector to lower the clip gain.
Use a Gain plugin first
Insert a 'Gain' plugin (found under Utility) as the first effect on your track. Adjust it so the level meters peak around -12dB.
Maintain unity gain through plugins
Check the output level of every plugin in your chain. The volume should stay roughly the same whether the plugin is on or off.
Protect the Master output
Ensure your Master fader stays at 0.0dB. Adjust individual track gains or faders to keep the master meter out of the red.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the Master output levels and letting them hit the red clipping indicator.
- Relying on the faders for gain staging instead of using a dedicated Utility Gain plugin.
