EQ Before or After Compression in Logic Pro
Decide where to place your EQ in the signal chain to achieve the cleanest and most controlled sound in your Logic Pro projects.
The order of EQ and compression changes how your processors react to the audio signal. Choosing the right sequence helps you either clean the signal before it's squeezed or shape the tone after it's leveled.
Follow these steps
EQ first for cleaning
Place EQ first to cut out unwanted low-end rumble or harsh frequencies. This prevents the compressor from 'reacting' to sounds you don't want.
Compress for stability
Place the Compressor second to smooth out the dynamics of the cleaned signal, resulting in a more predictable and stable level.
EQ after for tone shaping
Place EQ after the compressor if you want to boost frequencies (like adding 'air' to a vocal) without the compressor fighting those changes.
Swap and compare in Logic
Click and drag the plugins in the Logic Mixer channel strip to easily swap their order and compare the sonic difference.
Common mistakes
- Not experimenting with the order; sometimes 'wrong' sounds right for a specific creative effect.
