Audio Tracks vs Software Instrument Tracks in Logic Pro

This guide clarifies the fundamental differences between Audio tracks and Software Instrument tracks. Knowing which to choose ensures you can record your sources correctly and use the right tools for editing.
Follow these steps
Use Audio for External Sounds
Choose an Audio track when recording external sounds like vocals, guitars, or live drums via a microphone. These tracks display actual sound waves (waveforms).
Use Software Instruments for MIDI
Choose a Software Instrument track when you want to use Logic’s internal synths or samplers. These tracks record MIDI data (blocks) rather than actual sound.
Identify the Channel Strip Differences
Check the Inspector for 'Audio FX' slots on Audio tracks. On Software Instrument tracks, you will also see an 'Instrument' slot above the effects.
Add New Tracks Correctly
Use the 'Track' menu to add the specific type you need. Remember, you cannot record a microphone directly into a MIDI/Software Instrument slot.
